Glossy Buckthorn, a small tree or coarse shrub that grows up to 20 ft. tall, is one of the most common invasive plants in Acton. Its simple leaves leaves are 1 - 2.5 in. long, have untoothed edges and are usually arranged alternately although they may appear almost opposite near the branch tips. The leaves are dark green (in the summer) and glossy above, with either no hairs or slight hairs beneath. The leaves turn greenish-yellow to yellow late in the fall, and remain on the plant when most other species have already lost their leaves.

Young stems are greenish, often with soft fine hairs. Older bark is grayish-brown, with prominent light raised lenticels. Despite the name, it has no thorns. The heartwood (visible when cut) is pinkish to orange in growth over a couple of years old. The roots are deep red.

It flowers with clusters of one to eight 5-petaled yellow-green flowers after the leaves expand, from May to August. The berries are round and roughly 0.25 in diameter. They change from red to black as they ripen, from July to August. It should be noted that at any given time there can be flowers, partially ripened fruits (red) and fully ripened fruits (black) present on the same plant.

Two plants that can be mistaken for buckthorn are sweet-pepperbush and winterberry. The best way to discriminate is to look at the underside of the leaves:

Buckthorn and Sweet Pepperbush have well defined veins that curve toward the leaf tip (mature buckthorn has 8-9 veins). But Sweet Pepperbush leaves have teeth and buckthorn leaves do not.

Winterberry leaves do NOT have 8-9 well defined veins, and have teeth as well. For small plants, buckthorn and low bush blueberry can sometimes be confused when viewed from above, but the underside of low bush blueberry leaves do not have well defined veins. Generally, plants that might be confused with buckthorn, other than sweet pepperbush, do not have well defined veins when the underside of the leaf is viewed.

* There are two editors. `Edit' (or for new pages `Create') gets you the Visual Editor which is similar to MS Word (with less features). `Edit Source' (or for new pages `Create Source') gets you the original wiki source text editor: the source is written in wiki markup language, a simple text language that describes wiki pages. Normally you use the Visual Editor, but for a few things you must use the source text editor to add a line to the source in an appropriate place. The source edits needed to create/edit work areas (there are 2) are spelled out in detail below.
* The browser view of a page and the print view (available via control-P) are rather different due to very different font sizes.

== How to Create a Work Area ==
* Go to the Conservation Area Page, for the Conservation Area that contains the work area.
* Create an empty bulleted line. If there are already bulleted lines, go to the beginning of the line you want to insert a bulleted line before and type enter, or to add a bulleted line to the end, go to the end of the last bulleted line and type enter.
* Click link icon.
* Enter the short name of the new work area in the link text box (e.g., `Nashoba A').
* Click `Insert'.
* Click `Save Page'.
* Click the name of the new work area. You will get a message saying the page does not exist, and the `Create' option will be selected.
* Select `Create Source'.
* On the first line of the new work area, type `<nowiki>{{subst:Template:Work Area}}</nowiki>'.
* Save the page. Now the page is a copy of the Work Area template, which is Nashoba Area A. The page now has the correct format but the wrong text. You can edit the new page replacing the area name etc. to describe the new work area. You can change the map image as described below.

== Inserting/Replacing and Image ==

* To replace an image, delete the old image (click on it and type backspace) and proceed to insert the new image.
* Upload the image file. On the left-hand menu, click `upload-file', select the file, and upload it.
* If you want text to be at the left or right of the image, create a new empty line just ABOVE the text, and insert the image at the beginning of that line.
* Click `Insert', `Images and Media', `Search', enter the beginning of the file name and click on the file, then click `Use This File' and `Insert'.
* Then if you want the image to be in the left margin, right margin, or centered, click the image, `Edit', `Advanced', `Wrap Text Around This Item', and `Left', `Center', or `Right'.

==== Caution on Indentations ====
* Indenting paragraphs and lists is describe in the documentation but DOES NOT WORK when text is to the right of an image in the left margin.

==== Putting Text Below a Left or Right Margin Image ====
